Take a Haweswater Packed Lunch and make a day of it.
(a) Hikes to the East including Old Corpse Road, Swindale Head, the 'Concrete Road' to Shap (which can also be cycled) and along the lanes and streams around Bampton
(b) Hike around Haweswater - simply a must, this walk takes in mountains, waterfalls, becks, peat bogs, the shoreline and the dam.
(c) Gatescarth Pass and beyond: most of the major walks and rides start here, very quickly you will be up in the mountains with superb views of the whole of the Lake District and beyond to Morecambe Bay and the Pennines.
(d) High Street: the old roman road of 'High Street' passes literally along the crest of this, the highest peak in the Eastern Lakes and takes in Blea Water, the deepest Tarn in the Lakes at over 200 feet. Unforgettable at all times of the year.

Badger Hide at Haweswater

Enjoy intimate views of badgers and excellent photography opportunities, from the comfort of the RSPB's Badger Hide at Haweswater. A unique opportunity to watch and photograph these secretive mammals in the Lake District National Park, at close range.

LOWTHER CASTLE
Of the many treasures waiting to be discovered in the English Lake District, Lowther Castle is a particular gem. Built at the turn of the 19th century on the site of two previous houses, the castle was a grand affair boasting a room for every day of the year. Its gardens were the envy of the north.
But in 1957 the castle was demolished. Just the façade and outer walls remained standing and for over half a century, the place was empty – home only to chickens, pigs and the odd bat. The gardens were lost to wilderness.
